Karen was admitted to practice in 1997 in NSW. She holds a Master of Law and Management, and specialises in banking and financial services law as well as legal knowledge management.
Karen established her legal consulting practice Legal Know-How in 2012. She provides expert advice to firms in the following:
- businesses risk management
- legal and business process improvement
- legal documentation
- knowledge management and regulatory compliance (such as those regarding consumer credit, anti-money laundering (AML) and privacy legislation).
Before this Karen worked extensively in-house, including as Head of Legal for a leading Australasian non-bank lender, as well as in top-tier private practice, including as Counsel at Allen & Overy and Clayton Utz. She led the firms’ precedents and knowledge management initiatives, and had key responsibilities in developing and implementing national strategies, in particular, those relating to personal property securities (PPS).
Karen is the General Editor of two LexisNexis publications – Australian Banking Finance Law Bulletin and Financial Services Newsletter. She also authors for LexisNexis on specialist legal topics including AML and PPS.
Karen is an experienced chair, speaker and moderator at legal seminars and industry conferences. At postgraduate level, Karen’s professional development work includes legal webinars offered in all Australian jurisdictions. At the undergraduate level, Karen mentored penultimate and final year law students from UNSW, where she helped develop the skills of the mentees and assisted their transition into the legal profession.
